Belgium’s three regions have agreed to introduce a common digital road vignette on 1 May 2027 for Belgian and foreign vehicles with at least four wheels and a maximum authorised mass of up to 3.5 tonnes.

The plate-linked vignette will be required on regional roads and motorways in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels, with a single registration valid across all three regions. Vehicles using only local roads will not require one. Products covering one day, 10 days, one month, two months and one year are planned, with online sales due to begin on 1 March 2027.

Proposed annual prices are €125 for Euro 0-3 vehicles, €100 for Euro 4 and newer vehicles and €90 for zero-emission vehicles. The equivalent one-day rates would be €11.25, €9 and €8.10 respectively. The regions intend to use a shared digital platform and common tariffs and technical standards, while retaining territorial responsibility for enforcement.

Compliance will be monitored using automatic number-plate recognition cameras and mobile enforcement teams. An initial administrative fine of €70 is proposed, rising for repeat offences. Walloon mobility minister François Desquesnes said: “Everyone who uses our roads must contribute fairly to their maintenance.”

The regions must still finalise an interregional cooperation agreement and prepare the legislation required in each jurisdiction. The proposal will also be notified to the European authorities for validation. The Flemish government said the practical details remain under development and that implementation is subject to final parliamentary approval.
