Kapsch TrafficCom to deliver traffic management system for Kuwait University
Kapsch TrafficCom has been selected to deliver an integrated traffic management system for Kuwait University’s Sabah Al-Salem campus.
The campus spans approximately 13km of roads and serves around 50,000 daily commuters. Kapsch said the site operates as a self-sustaining “city campus”, with its own utility grid, emergency services and arterial road network. The company will implement its EcoTrafiX traffic management system alongside 38 EcoTrafiX controllers. The system is designed to integrate and coordinate multiple mobility systems across the campus, including internal intersections, parking facilities and access points.
According to Kapsch, the project is intended to address peak-hour congestion at main entrances, complex internal circulation between separate campus areas, and the absence of a central traffic management platform.
“By integrating multiple traffic, parking, and information systems into one system, we enable operators to manage mobility proactively, reduce congestion, and improve the daily travel experience for tens of thousands of commuters,” said Carolin Treichl, executive vice president EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom.
The project scope includes a traffic engineering study, integration of parking, intersection and traffic sensors, real-time traveller information through variable message signs, integration of automatic number plate recognition systems, special event traffic management and training for operators and local staff. Kapsch said dynamic lane assignment and special event modes will be used to optimise traffic flows at key gates, including during periods when traffic volumes exceed typical daily levels, such as graduations.
The contract was awarded by Zamco Integrated Solutions, a Kuwait-based systems integrator specialising in parking management, traffic solutions, automation and physical security systems.
The project is expected to take 20 months to complete.
