Q-Free has been selected by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) to deploy its Intrada Insight technology across Norway’s national AutoPASS tolling network.

The system will power NPRA’s nationwide Licence Plate Recognition Service for AutoPASS, Norway’s electronic tolling programme. The contract covers automated recognition and manual image review of all toll passage images, processing more than 760 million images and 400 million transactions annually. Q-Free said the multi-year agreement was awarded after a competitive tender and extends its long-standing relationship with NPRA.

The company’s technology will process image review data from every toll gantry across the AutoPASS network and translate video-based passages into billable vehicle data.

According to Q-Free, its technology is contracted to maintain a 98% automation rate and recently reached 99.29% in demanding conditions. The company said the system is trained to recognise licence plates from across Europe and beyond, supporting Norway’s high volume of international drivers. It also uses adaptive AI and machine learning to maintain recognition accuracy and improve performance over time. “NPRA consistently challenges the market to innovate,” added Talbot. “Their rigorous procurement and performance requirements raise the bar for the entire industry.
